Black and White and Grey All Over

Hello lovelies! I have been gathering all sorts of interesting materials for my next illustration. I found this weird spider web like fabric at Community Crafts and well as this interesting textured ribbon which will be perfect for giving me the stone texture I need. There is also a pair of trousers in the photo...I needed some grey fabric that could be turned into a banner  and these will be ideal.

Any thoughts as to what this one will be? I've mentioned stone so that's a clue. The yellow embroidery floss should be a clue as well.

Stay tuned for the reveal of the final piece.

I ate it, tasting my mother's blood in every bite.

Hello lovelies! I have just finished the second textile illustration for my upcoming book of feminist fairy tales entitled Wounds: New Openings Into Old Stories.

For this piece (which is one of the two versions of Snow White found in the book)  I wanted a simple design and a longer quote. I experimented with tea dying to make the fabric look worn, tearing it for a more ragged look and staining the edges for definition since the protagonist of the story Perchance to Dream is in such despair. I also wanted the skin of the apple to be almost artificially shiny on top of a backdrop that looked like rotting garbage.

Stay tuned for the next illustration .

A few materials and some lunch

Hello lovelies! I am starting on my second textile illustration.  This one is a much simpler design with a small piece of artwork and a longer quote from the story Perchance to Dream.

I love the background fabric which I bought as a fat quarter from Community Crafts yesterday. The green and browns gave me a feel of sickness and decay which perfectly fits with the story.

And is that apple part of my lunch or is it a clue to what story this might be? Hmmmm....you'll have to wait and see.

Burn your bridges. Wear your disguise.

Hello lovelies! I gave you a sneak peak the other day of the textile illustration to accompany my book Wounds: New Openings Into Old Stories  but here is the final product.

I used a scarf, an old belt and lots of buttons and ribbons as well as some tea dyed fabric to create the artwork to accompany the poem The State You're In.

Now onto the next illusctration.

Fabric Art for Wounds: New Openings Into Old Stories

Hello lovelies! I am so pleased to say that my upcoming book of feminist fairy tales entitled Wounds: New Openings Into Old Stories will be released in the autumn. We are working hard here at Wild Mountain Thyme Publications to get it ready.

I was inspired by an article about the Faith Ringold story quilt exhibit to create some fabric collage illustrations for my upcoming book as a companion piece that can be displayed at my book launch.

I went about my plans the way I always do-- to let my imagination work in the dreamtime. Every morning when I woke I would furiously scribble sketches in my notebook before I went off to work. I began to scour charity shops and visited our wonderful local craft shop (run for the last 40 years by two delightful ladies) for interesting materials.

Today I begin working on my first illustration and I thought i would give you a sneak peak of my work in progress.

Can you guess which famous fairy tale this comes from? I will give you a hint....if you have been reading my Fairy Tale Friday for the last few weeks you might be able to guess.

Stay tuned for the final textile illustration and a quote from the story.
